The conversation around medical marijuana in Wisconsin is gaining momentum. As more neighboring states implement medical marijuana programs, pressure is growing for Wisconsin to follow suit. Recent polls and legislative activity show strong public support and renewed optimism that medical marijuana reform could finally happen here!

Strong Public Support for Legalization

According to a recent Marquette University Law School poll, about 67 percent of Wisconsin voters support full marijuana legalization, with even higher levels of support for medical use specifically. That’s a notable increase over previous years, reflecting changing attitudes and growing awareness of marijuana’s medical benefits.

Support is widespread across age groups and political lines, though it is strongest among younger voters and those living in urban areas. As more Wisconsin residents see friends and family in other states benefit from medical marijuana, calls for reform here have grown louder.

A Governor Ready to Act

Governor Tony Evers has repeatedly voiced his support for marijuana legalization. After the June poll results were released, he stated publicly that he expects marijuana reform to happen “in the next legislative session” if Democrats gain greater control of the legislature.

While the Republican-led legislature has historically blocked marijuana bills, the growing public support is putting additional pressure on lawmakers to act. Advocates believe that medical marijuana legalization, at a minimum, has a strong chance of passing within the next year or two if political dynamics shift.

Legislative Efforts Already Underway

In the meantime, lawmakers are moving forward with smaller, incremental bills. Recently, a measure to expand access to CBD for any medical condition passed out of committee and is headed to the state Assembly for a vote. Currently, Wisconsin law allows limited use of CBD for seizure disorders, but this bill would make it available to any patient with a doctor’s recommendation.

While this is not the same as full medical marijuana legalization, it signals that attitudes in the legislature are beginning to change and lays the groundwork for broader reform.

What Patients Can Expect

For now, medical marijuana remains illegal in Wisconsin beyond the extremely limited CBD provisions in place.

However, advocates are optimistic that medical marijuana will be approved soon, potentially as early as the next legislative session. When that happens, qualifying patients in Wisconsin could finally gain access to a regulated, safe, and effective treatment option.

How Wisconsin Marijuana Card Can Help

At Wisconsin Marijuana Card, we are ready to help patients as soon as a medical marijuana program launches in the state. When the law changes, we plan to provide:

  • Physician evaluations and recommendations for patients who qualify under the program

  • Assistance with state registration and certification processes

  • Educational resources about the benefits, risks, and proper use of medical marijuana

  • Guidance on finding licensed dispensaries and selecting the right products for your condition

Our mission is to make the process of getting approved and staying compliant as simple and stress-free as possible for every patient.

Looking Ahead

The path to medical marijuana legalization in Wisconsin has been slow, but there are clear signs of progress. With strong public support, a governor pushing for reform, and ongoing legislative efforts, medical marijuana could finally become a reality here soon!

Until then, we will continue monitoring the latest developments and preparing to assist patients as soon as the program is in place.

We look forward to helping Wisconsin residents get the relief they deserve when the time comes.
